Tiffauges

Tiffauges is a small commune in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region of France. It is best known for its medieval castle, nicknamed "Bluebeard's Castle" due to its association with Gilles de Rais, an infamous 15th-century lord.

History and heritage

  • Tiffauges Castle : Built in the 12th century, this fortified castle was occupied by Gilles de Rais, Joan of Arc's companion in arms, who was later accused of sordid crimes. Today, the castle is a major tourist attraction, hosting historical reenactments and demonstrations of medieval weapons.
  • Gilles de Rais : Lord of Tiffauges, he became famous for his role alongside Joan of Arc, but also for the accusations of child murder that led to his execution in 1440.

Tiffauges today

  • The town retains a medieval charm with its narrow streets and rolling landscapes.
  • The castle welcomes many visitors every year and offers activities on the Middle Ages (war machines, archery, equestrian shows, etc.).
  • Proximity to other tourist sites such as Puy du Fou , which attracts many visitors to the region.
